Northwest Arkansas wiring
Old wiring, new houses and big storms.
Benton County has old and new homes side by side. Here’s what that means for the wiring in yours.
Storm country
Spring lines of storms, tornadoes like the one that hit Rogers on May 26, 2024, and winter ice bring surges and outages. Whole-home surge protection and a safely connected generator are common requests.
Storm questionsOld next to new
Houses near downtown Rogers and in older parts of Springdale and Bella Vista can have original panels, ungrounded outlets or 1970s wiring. A few miles away, a new build needs every light, fan and circuit planned from scratch.
Panel questionsUtility vs. electrician
SWEPCO, Carroll Electric Cooperative or a city utility like Bentonville’s owns the line and the meter. Everything from the meter base in, including panels, wiring, outlets and fixtures, is ours to handle.

Straight answers
Electrical questions, answered.
33 answers to the questions Northwest Arkansas homeowners ask most, from tripping breakers to generators and checking an Arkansas license.
All 33 answersI smell something burning near an outlet or the panel. What should I do?
Turn off the breaker for that circuit, or the main breaker, if you can do it safely, then call an electrician. If you see smoke or flames, get everyone out and call 911.
Why does my breaker keep tripping?
A breaker trips for one of three reasons: the circuit is overloaded, there’s a short circuit or ground fault, or the breaker itself is worn out. If it trips when one appliance runs, that circuit is probably carrying more than it was built for.
Is whole-home surge protection worth it in Northwest Arkansas?
For most homes, yes. A surge protector installed at the panel helps protect everything in the house, from the HVAC board to the refrigerator, from surges caused by lightning and utility switching.
What is a GFCI outlet and where do I need one?
A GFCI (ground-fault circuit interrupter) cuts power in a fraction of a second if current leaks to ground, such as through water or a person. It’s the outlet with the Test and Reset buttons.
When should I bring an electrician into a remodel?
Early, before walls are opened and before cabinets and fixtures are ordered. A kitchen or bath remodel often needs new dedicated circuits, GFCI and AFCI protection, and a lighting plan.
Who licenses electricians in Arkansas?
The Board of Electrical Examiners, part of the Arkansas Department of Labor and Licensing, licenses electricians in Arkansas. License classes include master, journeyman, residential master and residential journeyman.
